Final results are out

On Thursday, the results of the exemption exams in Final year were published. It is great to hear that everyone passed the BCDE – well done to all. There were a few students who did not gain exemption in the written exam, and will have to retake it in May – well done to all who did pass. Those who didn’t had individual direct feedback on Friday from senior members to assist them in understanding what areas of weakness they have.

Dr Andrew Blythe, Director of Assessment and Feedback has provided all the Year 5 students with feedback on their performance. Even in the BCDE, which all passed, there were still general areas of weakness, and we felt this would be of particular use to Year 3 and year 4 students, to facilitate their preparation for Finals in the future.

The Final year exams are unique in the medical school, in that they are exemption exams. Technically those who have not passed haven’t failed, they just have not yet demonstrated their competence in the areas examined. Those who passed have gained exemption form the May exams, those who haven’t passed have not gained exemption from the May exams and still need to demonstrate their competence.

Have you ever wondered about research in medicine – what it is like, and how you might get in to it?

The Head of the Medical School whose research has been been non lab based and a final year medical student whose research has been non-lab based, Sarah Purdy and Anna Taylor, wrote an article recently for the student BMJ (which you may have read).

It explores how to get started in this area of medicine with some useful tips for first steps. Worth a read. Follow this link to a PDF: How to get involved in research
