National Student Surgical Skills Competition

National Student Surgical Skills Competition

Do you want to be a surgeon? If so, this competition may be for you. For more information please see the flyer by clicking here: Surgical-Skills-Comp-2018-info

Winner of the Surgical Skills Competition 2016-2017, Christopher Barr (University of Bristol)

“It is really fantastic and quite unexpected for me to have won the UK-wide Surgical Skills Competition! I have always been set on a career in surgery, so taking part in this competition was something I thought would be good to have on my CV to demonstrate my commitment to a career in surgery. Overall I just really enjoyed the competition, the heats were challenging and testing, but at the same time really great fun so I’d definitely recommend to any undergraduates thinking of doing surgery as a career to do the competition, if it’s available again.”

Galenicals Carol Concert

Galenicals Carol Concert

The evenings are getting dark earlier, which signifies one thing – the Galenicals Carol Concert must be fast approaching! We would love to invite you to join us in singing carols, drinking mulled wine and eating mince pies. The medics choir and orchestra will perform some pieces, so it is a great opportunity to celebrate the musical talent on offer at Bristol.

The event is at 7pm on Saturday 8th December, at St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Rd. There is no charge or tickets needed, but any donations go to MSF. Hope to see you there!

Bananas for Breacon! Charity Fundraising Campaign

People say I’m a bit bananas, so I thought why not dress the part? You may have noticed me around in your lectures/campus as I’ve been dressing up in a banana costume for the week as I attend Medical School. The struggle of getting into my lecture seat, however, is nothing compared to that faced by the orphans and needy children supported by your donations.

As well as this, I’ve climbed Breacon Beacons! As anyone who knows me is aware, I’m an exhibition of human clumsiness, so please donate generously to motivate me to overcome this extra obstacle to the climb. Again all joking aside, this obstacle is nothing compared to the disadvantage faced by so many children and the needy in so many countries across the world, all of who Islamic Relief does so much important work for.

A bit more on Islamic Relief – they’re such a valuable charity – at the moment it is the biggest official charity on the ground in Syria helping people there as well as the refugees. They’re also working in Yemen, Palestine and east Africa and provide general aid such as food and water to many parts of Africa as well as sponsoring orphans. It would mean so much to get to my fundraising goal.

Best wishes and thank you so much

The L.I.F.E Foundation. volunteering opportunities for students with disabled babies, children and adults in Romania

Please see below volunteering opportunity which may be of interest (note – please contact the LIFE foundation direct with any queries)

The LIFE Foundation work in the Oltenia region in Romania with children and adults living in government care. The people we work with all have some form of developmental delay, physical disability and/or learning disability and many display institutionalised behaviours due to spending many years in state care. The aim of this project is to work with the children and adults in a way which provides them with some much-needed stimulation and at the same time aids their development. We run the project year-round with local staff and volunteers, but in the summer, we recruit volunteers to provide additional support for the children, adults and carers by running small activities and games, doing sensory activities, using Intensive Interaction and generally providing some much needed love and attention to the adults and children! We also recruit qualified health professionals for our Specialist trips to Oltenia, where a multi disciplinary team spend time training carers, and assessing needs and suggesting care plans for the children or adults.

We are looking for volunteers who can spare 2 weeks of their summer vacation for a challenging, exciting and rewarding experience. We welcome applicants who are passionate about supporting people in vulnerable situations, who can work well in diverse teams and who are keen to widen their experience and develop skills. After applying and undergoing a successful interview we provide training for all volunteers. As we are a charity, we ask for all volunteers to cover their trip costs plus a donation towards our organisation which ensures the sustainability of the project all year round.  We keep the costs to a minimum and strongly encourage volunteers to fundraise: we can provide advice and guidance as all of the committee have done lots of fundraising in the past!

Volunteers benefit from the projects in many ways; they are given the opportunity to experience different cultures, meet people from very different backgrounds and gain valuable work experience in educational and social care environments. The project is unique, challenging and extremely rewarding, and is a fantastic learning experience. We have volunteers who return year on year as they enjoy the trips so much and form real bonds with the children and adults we work with, as well as with local volunteers and staff.

To read more and apply to volunteer please visit our website (www.thelifefoundation.co.uk) or feel free to contact our project co-ordinator with any questions you may have on olt@thelifefoundation.co.uk

Bristol Medical School Colleges Event

Over the weekend the Medical School Colleges committee put on a wonderful event at St George’s Hall off Park Street. This was the first college activity of the year and certainly got things off to a great start!  Live music was provided by second year medics, ably supported by a local musician who can often be found busking in Broadmead. The Galenicals were represented at the event and some members of staff were also there.

‘It was amazing to get such a great turnout for a first event of the year. Seeing both first and second years having a good time, not only amongst themselves but with each other was fantastic. We are all very optimistic about future events and are already working on things to come!’  (Ben Holland, Colleges events coordinator)
