Intention: Embodiment and Knowing

Intention: Embodiment and Knowing: An Exhibition of Creative Pieces by students on the Intercalated BA in Medical Humanities on Sat, June 2, 2018 10:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Each year the University of Bristol offers medical students the opportunity to pause their studies and gain an intercalated BA in medical humanities. Joining English and Philosophy students, these medical students are able to explore some of the wider issues around healthcare with a particular emphasis placed on arts-based inquiry.

This exhibition is built around a range of creative pieces from the students which highlight the role of the arts in extending perceptions around embodiment and alternative ways of knowing and connecting. The curation of diverse works explores particular questions around meaning-making within a collectively agreed theme of ‘Intention’. The works are supplemented by reports of students’ experiences in learning about the role that music, art and theatre may play in therapy, and also how the arts contribute to well-being and self-knowledge within the medical community.

The fifth Peninsula Emergency Medicine & Trauma Conference is being held at Plymouth University on 5-6th May 2018.

This conference is absolutely ideal for undergraduate and early career doctors, nurses, paramedics and physician associates with an interest in emergency, trauma, pre-hospital, expedition and global healthcare. In addition, the range of topics and simulation on offer makes it an ideal opportunity to consolidate knowledge of caring for acutely sick and injured patients. Compared to other events of a similar calibre, it represents outstanding value.

Highlights include:

  • Don’t Survive- Thrive! Talks and interactive discussion exploring concepts of resilience and sustainable careers in EM and the acute specialties.
  • Managing traumatic cardiac arrest. The legendary ‘how to’ by recent London HEMS physician Dr David Wise.
  • International Perspectives on Emergency Care with a focus on EM in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
  • Emergency & Acute Care in Extreme Environments including flight, altitude, ultra- sports and diving medicine.
  • Spotting the Sick Child refresher on paediatrics emergency assessment

This year, there are two full afternoons devoted to simulation, moulage and clinical skills led by senior clinicians, with the help of human actors from the Casualties’ union. Weather permitting, we even have informal refreshments and networking planned for Saturday Evening!

PenEMTC is a non- profit conference run solely for the benefit of students and trainees. Our previous four conferences have received superb feedback. Weekend tickets including all of the above are currently available for a flat rate of only £36 using the discount code GOLDENHOUR10 – lunches and refreshments included! Everyone is welcome to support the Bristol Medics Rugby team in an exhibition match on the 5th of May which will serve as the final match of the season.

They will be playing Southampton Medics. The teams share an old rivalry throughout the years so it promises to be a great match! It will also be the first time Bristol have ever put out two teams against them. Timings are as follows:

2nd XV at 15:00

1st XV at 17:00

Both matches will be played on the first team pitch at Clifton RFC who have kindly agreed to host the event. There is a big stand with seating so you will be dry whatever the weather (hopefully good!).

We hope to see you all there. This is definitely a family friendly event – the more the merrier! The bar will be open all afternoon, they serve hot beverages and soft drinks as well as a wide selection of beer.

The event is on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/242067883033433/?active_tab=about
